Where Do I Start?

Major exploration starts with YOU. It's important to take a look at your own interests, values, skills and goals as well as think about how you make decisions . Exploring your interests can help you narrow the field a bit before confronting an overwhelming number of Major possibilities. It is an absolutely crucial part of your own development and planning.

It is also the most commonly skipped step in Major decision making. Have you ever known anyone who completely disliked their Major? How much effort did they put into evaluating their own interests, goals, and values before pursuing it? Probably little or none. We're here to help you so that you don't make the same mistake.

The decision is ultimately up to you! But, we want it to be an informed decision that you believe is the best choice you can possibly make at this point in your life.

There are three critical steps in the Major Exploration process:

  1. Understanding yourself - learn about your interests, values, abilities, etc.

  2. Majors exploration - discovering UofA majors and how they may fit with your interests, skills and values.

  3. Beyond majors (career exploration) - exploring how the majors you are considering link to various careers and learn about lots of career areas you don't know much about.

You are welcome to start at any point in this process. However, we recommend you start with Step 1. We are providing you with a step by step approach and you can check off each step as you complete it. Enjoy the journey. It will be worthwhile!
